Hammet brings a seductive, enigmatic presence to The Odyssey as Calypso, the immortal figure who shelters—and emotionally imprisons—Odysseus. Theron plays her less as a simple temptress than as someone isolated by eternity, using calm speech and controlled expressions to suggest both power and loneliness. Her performance is strongest in the quieter scenes, where Calypso’s affection becomes possessive and her apparent kindness gradually feels like another form of control. Theron gives the character an alluring stillness, making the island seem beautiful but psychologically claustrophobic. However, the role is relatively underwritten, and Calypso receives far less development than the scale of the story suggests. Much of the character’s mythology is communicated through exposition, leaving Theron limited space to reveal Calypso’s deeper motives. As a result, her performance can feel more like a striking presence than a fully realised dramatic arc. Even so, Theron makes an impression. She gives The Odyssey one of its most atmospheric figures, balancing glamour, menace and melancholy. Her screen time may be limited, but her Calypso adds a haunting emotional dimension to Odysseus’s long journey home.

Ryan Reynolds brings his familiar comic energy to Animal Friends, an R-rated live-action and animated adventure built around talking animals and chaotic personalities. His performance is fast, sarcastic and self-aware, allowing him to move comfortably between outrageous humor and more conventional action-comedy moments. Reynolds is at his best when the dialogue gives him room for improvisation. His timing and expressive delivery make even predictable jokes feel lively, while his chemistry with the animated characters helps create the film’s playful tone. He also understands how to make an obnoxious or reckless character remain entertaining rather than completely unlikeable. The weakness is that the role feels closely connected to Reynolds’s established screen persona. Viewers may see echoes of Deadpool, Free Guy and The Hitman’s Bodyguard, with the same wisecracking confidence appearing in a different setting. The film occasionally relies too heavily on his charisma instead of giving the character genuine emotional depth. Still, Reynolds provides exactly the kind of energetic performance Animal Friends requires. He keeps the adventure moving, delivers the film’s sharpest jokes and gives the animated chaos a confident human centre. It is not a radically new performance, but it is an enjoyable and effective one.
