Kathleen Robertson has a quality that television tends to eat alive: stillness. She arrived on Beverly Hills, 90210 as Clare Arnold, and where another performer might have pushed against the ensemble, Robertson simply listened -- a dry, watchful presence that made Clare feel like the one person in the zip code who knew exactly what was going on. The role could have been a ceiling; she used it as a floor. The independent work that followed showed what she was after. In XX/XY she plays a woman circling the same emotional evasion for years, and Robertson tracks that slow, corrosive patience without ever tipping into caricature. In Splendor she found a lighter register -- a woman navigating a genuinely odd domestic arrangement with a comic timing that stays bone dry throughout. On television, Boss and Murder in the First gave her the kind of procedural pressure that reveals whether a performer has real tensile strength. She does. In Murder in the First her courtroom scenes work because she knows when to let silence carry the argument. She has also been quietly reliable in bigger ensemble pieces -- Bates Motel and The Expanse both dropped her into established worlds and she found her footing quickly, never over-explaining her characters to the audience. Robertson is a well-aged firm cheese: not the sharpest thing on the board at first glance, but slice into it and the flavour is considerably more complex than the rind suggested.
