Len Lesser spent half a century as the man you recognised but could not quite name -- until Seinfeld made Uncle Leo inescapable. That role showed exactly what a seasoned character actor does with a sliver of screen time: Lesser turned a peripheral relative into a recurring comic event through sheer physical commitment, the eyes wide, the voice pitched somewhere between grievance and delight, the timing so precise that even a single word -- "Jerry!" -- became its own punchline. Before Leo, he had been working the margins of American television and film with quiet consistency. Kelly's Heroes, Papillon, and The Outlaw Josey Wales each gave him small assignments he met without fuss, a supporting man who understood that not every scene needs leading. On Everybody Loves Raymond he played Garvin, a different flavour of comic neighbour, gentler in register but still controlled. Lesser was a well-aged utility cheese -- nothing showy about the rind, but cut into him and there was real sharpness underneath, the kind that comes only from decades of patient craft.
