Tom Hanks has spent four decades making ordinary men feel consequential. The trick, if you can call it that, is a kind of radical availability -- he gives you the impression that nothing is being hidden and everything is being felt, which sounds simple until you watch someone else try it. The early work earned him the room. Big turns a boy-in-a-man's-body premise into something genuinely tender, Hanks locating the confusion in small physical details: the way his character sits at a desk, the slight delay before he laughs at an adult joke he doesn't quite follow. Splash and Bachelor Party established the comic ease, but Big showed the control underneath it. Philadelphia asked for something harder -- stillness under enormous pressure, a man rationing his own energy as it leaves him. Hanks keeps the performance internal, dignified without being cold. Forrest Gump goes the opposite direction: a man who understands less than everyone around him yet somehow accumulates more. The voice, the posture, the gently bewildered sincerity -- it is a complete physical invention. Cast Away is perhaps the purest demonstration. One man, one island, very little dialogue. Hanks fills it. Captain Phillips is the counterweight: a supporting cast all around him and he still narrows your attention to one face managing terror with bureaucratic precision, cracking only when it is finally safe to do so. He is like a well-aged farmhouse cheddar -- nothing showy on the surface, utterly reliable, and with a depth that keeps revealing itself the more carefully you pay attention.
